CHARACTER MODELING

— CHARACTER MODELING —

Modelling Process

In the earlier stage of building this model, I created the basic shapes of the character following my drawing of the front and side image of the character. Then I adjust the details of my model in the perspective view to better match the look I want the character to achieve. After the overall look reached my expectation, I began to refine the clothes, including adding buttons and adjusting cuff folds. Then I added some details to the character’s hat and refined the braid. Finally, the facial features of the character were carved and a hand-held lantern was built.。

Difficulties & Solution

I had the same problem when creating the head of this model as I did when building the Holiday Scene. The file crashed and could not be fixed. I had no choice but to rebuild his head again.

While building this character’s hat I inadvertently created a lot of irregular polygons due to its’ complexity. In a formal model polygonal faces are not allowed, but since this did not affect the rest of my progress I did not retopologies the whole model.

What can I do better next time

I used smooth mode when I was building the character’s hat. This created a problem which made the hat looks really scary in the original mode. Although this didn’t affect the UV colouring and animation, but building models in smooth mode is not a smart choice. In my next model building, I will first create the basic model in the original mode and then adjust it through smooth mode. Such a model will appear more compatible no matter in which mode. This will also avoid future irreversible mistakes.

Since file crashing happens to me a lot, I will try to avoid it by saving progress more frequently the next time I build a model.

I wasn’t particularly happy with the body parts of the character I created. The body parts of the front and side drawings I drew were not very detailed. As a result, the the model is not as detailed as I expected. Next time I will draw with more detail before building the model.
